Purpose of the Position

The Marketing and Communications Director is a results-oriented position with the goal of growing the Women’s Wilderness community and ensuring full enrollment of our girls’, women’s and LGBTQ+ courses. From a strategic and practical perspective, they oversee all marketing and outreach efforts, and lead  the organization’s external communications and branding. They supervise the Outreach and Admissions Coordinator and  interns as needed. This position requires big picture thinking/strategy and the ability to deliver and hustle at a very practical level as a member of a small team. The role is full-time, year-round  and reports to the Executive Director. 

Core Accountabilities

1. Develop and Manage an Effective and Informed Marketing Strategy (15%)

  • Create and update a Marketing Strategy in alignment with the organization’s overall strategy
  • Develop and track key performance indicators related to the goals of the strategy
  • Develop and manage a Marketing budget
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning, budgeting and performance reporting activities

2. Oversee Marketing Programs, Courses and Events (25%)

  • Plan and occasionally develop marketing assets and messaging aligned with current trends and best practice 
  • Ensure visibility of marketing/advertising amongst strategically-identified audiences
  • Oversee progress of marketing and advertising efforts as tracked by supervisees 
  • Create and maintain dynamic yearly marketing, communications and promotional calendar 

3. Oversee the Building, Maintenance and Growth of Community Partnerships (with the goal of cultivating enrollment in courses) (10%)

  • Grow and evolve partnership list with a focus on our key demographics (women, LGBTQ+ people and girls, including those with low-income and racial minority backgrounds)
  • Supervise Outreach and Admissions Coordinator in cultivating and maintaining partnerships 
  • Initiate bilateral meetings to explore synergy as needed 
  • Broker contracts and memoranda of understanding, when appropriate

4. Lead Organizational Communications (20%)

  • Ensure brand integrity across external communications and lead on communications both internal and external as they pertain to social justice and current events 
  • Plan and oversee the creation and deployment of social media content across channels 
  • Manage design, content and function of www.womenswilderness.org
  • Develop and implement a search engine optimization strategy
  • Develop mass and targeted emails on a bi-monthly basis to inform and engage our community — both in the aggregate and segmented 
  • Support and guide the creation of mass mailings (post) at key intervals during the year, including supporting fundraising efforts
  • Collaborate with Directors to produce thought-leadership pieces for earned and owned media channels
  • Create and track social media content, liaise with influencers, host our social media community across channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn currently)

5. Grow the Women’s Wilderness Community of Support (10%)

  • Represent Women’s Wilderness at local and national events
  • Initiate and manage relationships with key influencers across relevant industries (outdoor industry, education, girl/women/LGBTQ+-serving communities, social justice and activism)
  • Collaborate with Outreach and Admissions Coordinator to host community-building events
  • Manage Salesforce database of contacts and community to ensure individuals are tracked and updated, collaborate with other users across the organization to ensure quality control, liaise with developers to ensure functional optimization
  • Oversee a volunteer strategy, manage recruitment, tracking and communication of volunteers

6. Actively Engage with the Team (20%)

  • Manage the Outreach and Admissions Coordinator
  • Manage 1-2 Social Media and/or Marketing Interns 
  • Attend weekly team meetings and key events
  • Liaise with key staff across functions of this position
  • Recruit, hire and manage Marketing and Outreach interns, as needed
  • Identify and manage third-party vendors to perform on strategy
  • Participate as the Staff representative on Board of Directors Marketing Committee meetings

Job Type

Full time (40 hours per week), Exempt

Compensation 

The salary range for this position is $50,000 – $60,000 annually, benchmarked based on Colorado Nonprofit Survey averages relative to comparable organizations. Exact placement on range will be determined based on a combination of experience, education and demonstrable skills. Location

This position is based in Boulder, Colorado and requires regular office presence with some flexibility for remote work. The nature of this role requires travel around the Front Range and occasionally elsewhere and will require a personal vehicle (mileage is reimbursed). 

Experience, Skills and Abilities

This role requires a combination of marketing, communications, community-building and outreach experience. The Marketing and Community Outreach Director’s ability to simultaneously work at a strategic level and deliver results on key activities will be critical. Specifically, this role requires: 

  • 5-10 years of marketing/communications experience
  • 5-10 years of community-building, outreach and community engagement experience
  • Experience in developing strategy and budgets
  • Experience in managing multicultural teams with an eye towards achieving collective goals
  • Experience in digital and traditional marketing and search engine optimization
  • Experience in managing organizational or cause-related social media
  • Results-orientation 
  • Strong communication skills, including intentional listening, speaking, and high-quality, audience-centric writing skills
  • Relational savvy and partnering skills –  strength in creating and maintaining relationships and developing partnerships with shared interests
  • Public speaking skills, comfort in speaking in front of groups of people
  • Ability to self organize and deliver on goals
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines, self manage time and workload 
  • Investigative sensibility and creative thinking
  • Ability to work in dynamic, fast-paced and at times, ambiguous non-profit environments
  • Interest in the outdoors
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity and/or environmental conservation/stewardship
  • Experience and skills in leading organizational communications pertaining to social justice, especially gender justice, and racial justice
