Let’s Grow Together. As we enter our 25th year, we honor those who carved this path before us, we celebrate the accomplishments of our community, and we are inspired and humbled by the work ahead.
We are committed to creating space for girls, women, and non-binary people of all ages and backgrounds to find their place, their voice, and their power in the outdoors. We invite you to join us as we look forward to our next 25 years.
Everyone has something they can give – whether it’s making a donation, joining our events, or advocating for a more accessible outdoors. Whether you have experienced Women’s Wilderness once or regularly, we hope you’ll join in.

Looking Back
Click the arrows to see our progress these past 25 years.
Laura Tyson and two other Outward Bound instructors launch Women’s Wilderness and their first course, Girlz in the Woodz, an 8-day backpacking trip for teenage girls. Women’s courses and a Girlz on the Rocks climbing course launch shortly after.
By 2005, Women’s Wilderness had grown to serve over 500 girls and women annually, with 56% of girls receiving scholarships.
By 2010, over 3,800 girls and women had participated in Women’s Wilderness programs, and $175,000 of scholarships had been awarded.
Women’s Wilderness experiences financial hardships and is forced to lay off staff and pause programming. Despite receiving advice to dissolve, the board fights to find a path forward.
Under the courageous leadership of Emily Isaacs, a rebuild of the organization begins. By the end of the year programming had been re-established, and plans were in place to hire of the first full-time Program Director.
Women’s Wilderness moves into the historic Harbeck-Berheim House in Boulder, in partnership with the City of Boulder. The partnership provides a much needed long-term home for the organization (and our expansive library of gear).
