Purpose of the Position

The Food & Logistics Coordinator role manages and oversees all rations and food planning, shopping, packing and briefings for all Women’s Wilderness programs with a specific focus on summer courses. This is a hands-on role that is crucial to the success of programs and works in collaboration with the Program Director and summer interns. The Food & Logistics Coordinator is responsible for ensuring all courses are fully and appropriately equipped with appropriate rations via shopping, packing, and organizing van schedules. This role prepares menus and cooks food for Women’s Wilderness events, including (but not limited to) staff training and women’s retreats, with more upscale menus. This position also supervises and manages the Food & Logistics Intern with support of the Program Director. 

Core Accountabilities

1. Program Logistical Support [75%]

  • Manage food budget with support from Program Director
  • Develop menus and food plans for courses with COVID transmission and participant/staff dietary restrictions in mind
  • Shop for, prep and pack out all courses with needed supplies
  • Brief instructors the food and gear that will accompany them into the field
  • Provide support to instructors around cooking and backcountry menu planning
  • Organize and systematize food rations and quantities
  • Inventory and maintain organization systems of the rations room
  • Shop for gear and food as needed through the summer program season
  • Inventory, organize, clean, and repair cooking gear before, after, and during the summer program season
  • Function as a driver for course events and emergencies with a 15 passenger van
  • Orient new or returning staff to the location and logistic procedures for the course.  
  • Educate field staff about their role and responsibilities within logistics systems
  • Attend and Support Staff Training in mid May
  • Evaluate and improve logistics systems

2. Manage Seasonal Interns [20%]

  • Train food intern(s) on logistical duties
  • Manage intern(s)
  • Build and implement a summer schedule for the summer interns that balances time off, office time, and time in the field
  • Triangulate with the Program Director and interns to provide formal evaluations and feedback throughout the season
  • Collaboratively build social and community-based gatherings for staff 

3. Women’s Wilderness Team Engagement [5%]

  • Attend weekly team meetings and key events
  • Participate in 1 on 1 meetings with manager regularly
  • Participate in evaluations and feedback sessions
  • Liaise with key staff across functions of this position
  • Support the advancement of the mission of Women’s Wilderness by participating    in strategy/goal setting and planning processes

Job Type

This is likely a 5-month position. During May-August it will be full time (40 hours per week). In the Spring and Fall (April, May, September and October) the schedule is part-time and negotiable.  This is a  Non- Exempt position. 

Location

Boulder, Colorado. In-person.

Compensation

Pay is $16-18 per hour, based on experience. $105-$135 per day while in the field, dependent on experience. Monthly phone/technology stipend provided for use of personal phone and/or computer during contract.

Demonstrable Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with a large and dynamic team 
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team in a fast-paced, demanding environment 
  • Ability to budget, shop for, pack, and manage appropriate backcountry and front-country meals for large groups of people
  • Ability to plan menus and experience working in an industrial style kitchen environment
  • Ability to inventory, track, and manage a sizable stock of gear 
  • Experience managing people (preferred)
  • Experience using Google/G Suite 
  • Ability to self organize, manage projects and deliver results that are on time and on budget
  • Ability to work positively with girls, women and LGBTQ+ people to get them geared up
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding, and lean professional environment
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record

Experience

  • Preferred backcountry, outdoor education and/or wilderness therapy field experience
  • Experience with supporting outdoor programs in a logistical capacity (preferred)
  • Experience working in commercial cooking or industrial kitchen settings
  • Experience with backcountry cooking and its limitations/possibilities
  • Knowledge about outdoor recreation gear, how to use such gear, and how to repair gear
  • Experience working effectively on diverse teams 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work long days and/or on nights and weekends as needed during the high season
  • Must be able to carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
